Septic tanks require periodic pumping–generally between three and five years. During their operation, septic tanks separate your home’s waste into waste two components: water and a solid byproduct we call sludge. The sludge is made up of solids that the bacteria in your tank cannot process any further. The sludge settles to the bottom of your septic tank and will stay there until it can be pumped out. The waste water then travels from your tank into the pipes of your drain field, also known as the leech field, where it is released into ground. The good bacteria in your yard’s soil “clean” the waste water until it doesn’t pose a threat to ground water or can contaminate the environment.
