All septic tanks require the maintenance task known as pumping. Septic tanks are designed to separate the waste from your home into two components: water and sludge. The sludge is made up of the solids that the bacteria in your tank cannot break down. The sludge settles to the bottom of the tank and will remain there until it is removed. The water continues on its journey from your tank out into the pipes of your drain field where it is released into the soil. Bacteria in the soil further “clean” the waste water until it poses no threat to the environment or ground water.
